Noonum Snacks: Space Data Centers

What’s happening

Google has taken an early step toward putting AI computing in orbit. Its Project Suncatcher prototype reached a “Hello World” milestone when an onboard Gemma 4 model, running on a data center class TPU, generated a haiku in space. As terrestrial data centers face growing resistance from some local communities, could orbit become the next frontier?

Seizing the Opportunity

Drawing on coverage from CNN and CBS, Noonum’s Agent built an investment objective spanning the emerging space data center ecosystem:

Invest in companies developing orbital data centers, space-based computing platforms, satellite data-processing hardware, launch services, and the infrastructure needed to support data storage and processing in orbit.

Noonum’s Strategy Builder returned 256 companies for this strategy, with a combined market cap of $27 trillion. SpaceX tops the list, followed by Iridium Communications, Rocket Lab, and EchoStar.

The basket’s weight is spread over seven sub-themes, from the processors and satellites in orbit to the launch vehicles and ground stations that serve them.

Key Insights

The opportunity extends well beyond orbital data centers. Direct orbital compute and announced data centers account for 13.77% of the basket. Satellite platforms and operators make up 41.92%, while spaceborne processors and electronics add 17.24%.

The infrastructure on Earth matters, too. Ground stations and mission-control systems represent 13.61% of the basket. Orbital processing needs those links to receive instructions and deliver useful data. It is also nice to see steel and heavy-industry names in the mix for their satellite assembly and testing, launch-pad cryogenic systems, or vibration-isolation hardware for orbital payloads.

The clearest specialists are not always the most talked about. Satrec Initiative, a Korean company, has a 52.65% Linguistic Beta but just 0.21% Market Buzz. SpaceX shows the reverse pattern: 17.86% Linguistic Beta and 53.40% Market Buzz. These measure thematic fit and attention, not expected returns.

The Takeaway: Orbital compute is the headline, but almost three quarters of the basket’s weight sits in the satellites, processors, and ground stations it depends on. Attention is just as lopsided. SpaceX, NVIDIA, Alphabet, Amazon, and Rocket Lab take 73.44% of the Market Buzz, while the 10 closest fits by Linguistic Beta, with a median market cap of $340 million, share 1.20%.
